  • Dubai Chocolate gelato from Julietta in New York. Reminds me of a Nestle Crunch bar, with more subdued crispiness. Pistachio was subtle. Had a rich chocolate flavor.

  • Jambon Beurre

The Parisian Jambon Beurre’s beauty lies in its simplicity. A baguette, some butter, a few slices of ham, and sometimes a bit of cheese. That which could otherwise be dull and uninspired is transformed by the quality of its elements. While sandwiches are typically lunch fare in the US, these serve just as well, if not better, as breakfast.

I tried three different versions this past week. Le Petit Vendome’s rendition had the best ham and most variety. I particularly liked “the Special” which added goat cheese into the mix. Finding a place to eat your “to go” bakery items can be challenging in Paris. By the time I made it back to my hotel, the baguettes were past their prime. The inner crumb was satisfyingly chewy, but the crust had become somewhat leathery and tough.

I made it to La Parisienne in the morning. The baguettes fared better, though the ham was not to the same level as Le Petit Vendome’s. The best by far was from Boulangerie Utopie, whose baguettes had both a crisp crust and a firm elasticity along with a robustly complex flavor profile attributable to the presumably long fermentation time.

  • A Good Source of Protein

When a food is cited as a “good source of protein”, consider how much protein it would supply if half of your calories for the day came from it. Peanut butter is often described as a “good” or “great” source of protein. 10 tablespoons of peanut butter supplies about 1000 calories and 45 g of protein - on the low side for a daily intake, especially considering the it doesn’t have a great protein quality (PDCAAS) score.

  • It’s great that Apple added more robust package tracking to the Wallet app in iOS 26, but I’m sticking with Parcel. A major limitation to Apple’s solution is that it’s isolated to the iPhone. There’s no equivalent on the Mac or iPad.

  • Granted it’s only been one day with the 26 betas (iOS, iPadOS, MacOS, WatchOS), but I’m finding the anxiety around the UI changes way overblown. Overall, I find them a definite upgrade and have not had any significant issues. The Mac OS changes in particular have been refreshing.

  • Chobani Zero Sugar yogurts are a convenient snack, but a bit too runny and bitter for my tastes. A quarter teaspoon of guar gum and a bit of sucralose is a quick fix.

  • The addition of “Stage Manager Mode” to iPhones plugged into an external display may have major implicaitons. It could essentially transform the phone into a full-fledged computer when docked (e.g. via USB). The rationale for increasing processor performance in phones has been dubious in recent years - this could change things.

  • I left this chamomile tea brewing overnight, reheating in the next morning. Apparently, chamomile is hard to overbrew. Tasted fine - may even better than a conventional brew.

  • I loved the ability to of the Ember Mug to keep coffee warm, but I found it hard to clean and keep charged, especially as the charging base pins are easily damaged. With a bit of preheating, the Yeti Rambler mugs do an excellent job.
